ABUJA — The Kogi East Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack and obstruction of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.
Ameh described the incident as “ridiculous and unacceptable,” alleging that the roadblock and intimidation were carried out by individuals who may have been acting with the backing of those in power.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ameh said no Nigerian should be subjected to harassment, threats or unnecessary obstruction while travelling on a public road, stressing that political influence must not be used to intimidate citizens or create an atmosphere of fear.
He said the alleged action was inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 41(1), which guarantees the right of citizens to move freely throughout the country, and Section 40, which protects the right to peaceful assembly and political association.
Ameh said, “If these actions were indeed sponsored or encouraged by anyone connected to the state government, then that is deeply troubling and must be thoroughly investigated.
“Public office is a responsibility, not a licence to intimidate citizens or empower thugs.”
The NDC candidate urged the Benue State Government to publicly condemn the incident and ensure that Obi’s visit to the state was not disrupted by further interference.
He also called on relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and prosecute those found responsible, irrespective of their political affiliations.
“Benue deserves leadership that protects its people and respects their constitutional rights, not actions that harass, intimidate or humiliate citizens,” Ameh said.
He urged Nigerians to continue speaking up for peace, accountability and the rule of law.
