Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called for action following what he described as a reported attack on Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his supporters in Benue State.

Adeyanju, in a statement, described the reported attack as repugnant to the principles of democracy, stressing that freedom of movement is a constitutionally guaranteed right of every Nigerian citizen.

He said political differences should not be used to justify intimidation or the restriction of citizens’ rights, describing the reported targeting of a presidential candidate as particularly disturbing.

According to him, politics should be about competing ideas, policies and blueprints, rather than thuggery, intimidation or rigging.

Adeyanju urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to unequivocally condemn the reported attack, while calling on the Benue State Governor to ensure that his administration does not tolerate or encourage what he described as brigandage.

He also appealed to political sycophants and those seeking to please people in power to desist from what he termed anti-democratic acts, stressing that political differences should not undermine Nigeria’s democratic values.
