The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has unveiled plans for the maiden edition of its Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC 2026), an initiative aimed at promoting gender inclusion in national security while recognising individuals making exceptional contributions to peace, public safety and national development.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aishatu Ibrahim, described the summit as a timely platform that will bring together key stakeholders to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges and strengthen collaboration for lasting peace.
The summit is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, with participants expected from government, the Armed Forces, paramilitary organisations, law enforcement agencies, the intelligence community, traditional institutions, the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations, academia, the media, the private sector and development partners.
Aishatu Ibrahim said security should no longer be viewed as the exclusive responsibility of government and security agencies, stressing that every citizen has a vital role to play in safeguarding lives, property and national unity.
She explained that discussions at the summit will focus on emerging security threats, strengthening partnerships, promoting women’s participation in security leadership and encouraging community-driven approaches to tackling insecurity.
The event will also feature the presentation of the Women in Security Awards to carefully selected individuals whose outstanding service has advanced national security, humanitarian intervention, community policing, peacebuilding, strategic leadership and media advocacy.

According to the NAWOJ Chairperson, the awards are designed to celebrate integrity, patriotism, courage, professionalism and selfless service, rather than political influence or popularity.
She further noted that the initiative will reinforce cooperation between the media and security institutions, emphasising the media’s critical role in promoting responsible journalism, combating misinformation and fostering peaceful coexistence.
Ibrahim called on corporate organisations, development partners, public institutions and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative, expressing confidence that recognising excellence will inspire greater commitment to building a safer, more peaceful and united Nigeria.
The maiden WINSEC 2026 is expected to provide a strategic platform for dialogue, collaboration and practical solutions to contemporary security challenges while celebrating those whose dedication continues to strengthen the nation’s peace and security architecture.
