President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately take steps to vacate a court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, citing concerns over the timing of the action ahead of the state’s governorship election.
In a statement issued from the State House on Thursday, the President said although he was not opposed to the EFCC carrying out its statutory mandate, he was “deeply embarrassed” by the timing of the agency’s action, noting that decisions taken by federal institutions are often perceived as having his approval.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the independence of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, stressing that he had consistently refrained from interfering in the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative bodies.
According to him, strong democratic institutions must be allowed to operate professionally, independently and within the ambit of the law without political interference.
The President, however, said he had yet to receive a full briefing on the circumstances that led the EFCC to obtain the court order on August 5, 2026, but maintained that the timing of the action was “inauspicious.”
He warned that with the Osun governorship election only days away, no action should create the impression that any federal agency was being used to influence or interfere with the electoral process.
“In the overriding public interest and to preserve public confidence in the integrity, credibility and fairness of our democratic process, I have directed the EFCC to immediately approach the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard,” the President said.
