Former Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, has been named Media Diplomat of the Year at the 13th Bayelsa Media Awards, held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in Yenagoa, as the state marked 30 years of creation.
The award recognises Ebienfa’s role in using strategic communication to advance diplomacy, project Bayelsa and Ijaw interests, and strengthen engagement between government, the media and the international community.
The organisers said his selection followed a review of young Bayelsans who have distinguished themselves in projecting the state’s image beyond its shores. They cited his professionalism in handling sensitive political communication and his ability to articulate issues of national and international importance.
Describing him as a “true Media Diplomat,” the organisers said his approach to public communication reflected a generation of Ijaw voices combining intelligence, composure and professionalism to advance their interests and tell their stories to the wider world.
In his reaction, Ebienfa described the honour as both an encouragement and a call to greater responsibility, noting that his service as spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided an opportunity to communicate Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities and explain the country’s positions on regional and international issues.
He stressed that media diplomacy had become increasingly important in shaping international relations, adding that credible and timely communication was essential to building public trust, countering misinformation and projecting Nigeria’s interests globally.
Ebienfa thanked the organisers, media practitioners, foreign service colleagues, mentors, friends and associates who supported his professional journey. He reaffirmed his commitment to accuracy, accountability and constructive engagement, dedicating the award to professionals who use communication to promote peace and cooperation among nations.
The former spokesperson was represented at the ceremony by his foster son, Woyengiowoi Precious Michael. The Bayelsa Media Awards honours individuals and organisations whose contributions have advanced the state’s media, public service and development.
