ABUJA – The Nigerian Correctional Service has unveiled its first-ever Unified Training Manual and standardised professional course badges in a move aimed at harmonising training and strengthening professionalism across its institutions nationwide.

The new manual replaces the 2019 edition and provides a single training framework for personnel across various cadres, disciplines and specialised areas of the Service.

The NCoS said the revised curriculum was developed internally by its personnel, marking a departure from the previous practice of relying substantially on external bodies for training materials.

According to the Service, the new approach will promote institutional ownership, preserve professional knowledge and ensure that training content reflects operational realities and emerging demands in correctional administration.

The unified framework covers command courses, commissioned officers’ courses, basic recruit and Chief Corrections Assistants’ courses, as well as specialised and refresher programmes.

The Service also unveiled standardised course badges for different levels of professional training, including the Advanced Command Course Badge for Controllers of Corrections, Command Course Badge for Deputy Controllers of Corrections, Chief Superintendent of Corrections Course Badge and Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Course Badge.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, described the initiative as a landmark achievement that would strengthen professionalism, institutional identity and uniformity in personnel training.

Nwakuche, who was decorated with one of the newly unveiled badges, said the insignia represented professional identity and accomplishment, urging officers to uphold the discipline, values and excellence associated with the distinctions.

The CG also decorated the Deputy Controllers-General with the Advanced Command Course Badge as part of efforts to recognise professional advancement within the Service.

The Deputy Controller-General in charge of Training and Staff Development, Olanrewaju Amoran, said the unified manual was designed to provide a contemporary training resource capable of addressing the changing demands of correctional administration.

Amoran said the curriculum drew on the expertise of experienced personnel across relevant professional areas, adding that the manual would serve as a common reference for instructors and trainees across all NCoS training institutions.

He noted that the framework would improve consistency in the delivery of courses and strengthen continuous professional development by providing standardised learning materials throughout officers’ career progression.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Manual Review Committee and Deputy Controller-General, Human Resources Directorate, Ado Sale, stressed that the course badges were professional distinctions earned through prescribed training.

He said the badges were neither ceremonial accessories nor items for sale in open markets, but were formally conferred by the Commandants of the Service’s training institutions upon officers who had completed the required courses.

The NCoS said the initiative formed part of its ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, improving training standards and building a modern correctional workforce capable of responding to emerging challenges.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to continuous professional development as part of efforts to build a competent, disciplined and forward-looking workforce for the effective execution of its custodial, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration mandates.

The ceremony featured an Award of Excellence presented to Nwakuche by the Review Committee in recognition of his leadership and support for the initiative.

The Controller-General also presented plaques and certificates of recognition to members of the committee for their contributions to the development of the new curriculum and training manuals.
