ABUJA – A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and former Political Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has mourned the death of former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory Council, Comrade Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen.
Alkali, in a condolence statement on Wednesday, described Osadebamwen’s death as a painful loss to the journalism profession and the country, saying the deceased made significant contributions to truth, accountability and public service.
The APC chieftain said he had known and worked closely with Osadebamwen for many years, describing him as a trusted friend, courageous journalist and professional who remained committed to the ethics and ideals of journalism.
He said, “Patrick was more than a journalist to me; he was a trusted friend, a courageous professional and a man whose unwavering commitment to the ethics and ideals of journalism earned him the respect of colleagues, public officials and members of the wider society.”
Alkali noted that Osadebamwen belonged to a generation of journalists who regarded journalism as a sacred calling dedicated to truth, public enlightenment, accountability and national development.
He added that as Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, the late journalist played important roles in strengthening the union and advancing the welfare and interests of media practitioners in the FCT and beyond.
However, Alkali expressed concern over what he described as the disturbing increase in the deaths of journalists in the FCT and across the country.
He said the frequent loss of media professionals should serve as a wake-up call to stakeholders to pay greater attention to the welfare, healthcare and overall wellbeing of journalists.
According to him, journalists make enormous sacrifices in informing, educating and enlightening the public and deserve adequate support and care.
While describing Osadebamwen’s death as a painful loss, Alkali urged colleagues and stakeholders to celebrate his legacy of service, integrity, courage and professionalism.
He extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the NUJ FCT Council, media practitioners, friends and associates, praying Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
He also prayed for strength and fortitude for the family and other bereaved colleagues to bear the loss.
